Let's Talk Inflammation

What is it?

Inflammation often gets a bad reputation, but it’s actually an important part of how our bodies protect us.
When you get injured, fight an infection, or experience another form of stress, your immune system creates an inflammatory response to help protect and repair the body. This short-term response is normal and necessary.
The concern is when inflammatory signals remain elevated over longer periods. This is where supporting the body’s own systems that help maintain a healthy inflammatory response becomes important.
So, where does sulforaphane come in?

Sulforaphane is a naturally occurring plant compound found especially in broccoli sprouts—and one of the reasons these tiny greens have attracted so much scientific attention.
One of sulforaphane's most well-studied actions is its ability to activate a cellular pathway called Nrf2. Think of Nrf2 as one of the body's built-in cellular defence switches.
When activated, Nrf2 helps turn on genes involved in:
- Antioxidant and cellular defence
- Protection against oxidative stress
- Detoxification processes
- Regulation of inflammatory responses
Why does this matter for inflammation? Oxidative stress and inflammation are closely connected. By activating Nrf2 and strengthening our cells' own protective systems, sulforaphane may help support the body's ability to maintain a balanced inflammatory response.
Research also suggests that sulforaphane can influence other signalling involved in inflammation, including NF-κB—a pathway involved in producing inflammatory signals.
The takeaway
Sulforaphane isn't about “turning off” inflammation—inflammation has an important job.
Instead, the exciting science is around how sulforaphane interacts with the body's own cellular defence systems, particularly Nrf2, helping cells respond to oxidative and inflammatory stress.
Purphane happens to be an especially rich dietary source of this fascinating plant compound.
